Enhance The Safety Of Your Playground With Playground Surfacing From MVP Playgrounds

Playground surfacing is what surrounds your playground, and without a doubt, cushions any falls or accidents that are uncommon, but do happen. There are many varieties of playground surfacing, and it’s important to understand what they are and which one is right for your playground.

Loose-Fill Playground Surfacing

Loose-fill playground surfacing is installed manually and by hand to create a level surface throughout the entirety of the playground area.

Advantages: Affordable and easy to install

Disadvantages: Frequent maintenance, safety hazards (shards of glass, hard debris, etc.), and difficult to stay ADA compliant

Loose-fill materials compress over time as a result of usage impact and weathering, and must be replaced and refilled to keep an adequate depth to buffer any falls. Twelve inches of loose-fill playground surfacing are recommended throughout the playground equipment area.

Pea Gravel

Pea gravel is what many think of when we talk about playground surfacing. It’s the small pebbles used to fill a playground.

Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch is a soft and durable playground surfacing material that is superb in its absorption characteristics.

Wood Chips

Woods chips provide a nice aesthetic and are great for impact reduction.

Non-Loose-Fill Playground Surfacing

Non-loose-fill or unitary playground surfacing is typically applied and installed with a binder that must be poured at the commercial playground site.

Advantages: Low maintenance, high durability, and longevity

Disadvantages: Higher initial up-front costs

Artificial Turf

Artificial turf gives the effect of a beautiful lush, green lawn without the upkeep! This playground surfacing material is very little maintenance and an underpad can be added to create a safer playground area.

Grass Mats

Grass mats are tiles with grass growing within them — they look nice and natural, but require the upkeep of traditional grass. Keep in mind if not cared for properly, the grass can die and look aesthetically unappealing, but can also impact the cushion it provides.

Pour-In-Place Rubber

Pour-in-place rubber comes in a variety of colors and design options and is easily maintained with regular sweepings or vacuum cleanings. This playground surfacing material is a popular choice because of its safety and longevity.
